Hello once again readers!
In this article, I would share my experience of being a First Responder. Just for the basics, a First Responder is a person who is trained to respond to emergencies. Its one of the jobs where you get to do Firefighting and be a Paramedic. This has been my hobby for about a two years now, and I during this time I've worked with Two Fire stations and a couple of hospitals in India. Some of them being Max Hospital, and Artemis Hospital. For firefighting , I've worked with a Government stations and a private fire station. All this is done on voluntary basis, and only time to time when I am able to help, not just always. Its a hobby, as even if Ive undergone training and helped people, Im still not certified.
So well this was just a little insight about it. Now coming how it all started.
It all started when I was 11 years of age (Yes 11, I bet most of you think its too young) when I started getting my interest in the Emergency services. The Emergency Vehicles passing by used to fascinate me quiet a lot, and I gradually wanted to be in one of those places, where I get a chance to help people.
A year later, I started taking parts in fire drills, and pretty much excelled in it. That was the start to my so called hobby-career.
I learned how to handle the hose, how to use extinguishers and every thing I needed to know. Later, I got into fire training with the Fire Department. Alongside, I got into the medical sector to train for medical hazards and first aid. Life was not that easy, with studies and all this together, but I managed.
At the age of 13, I was finally became a First Responder, which was a proud moment.
Now moving on, how is it like to be a First Responder.
There is nothing much in this part, I'll just tell you that its a great feeling. Around Sundays, I go to the firestation and stay there. At times even a
Saturday-Sunday shift. You never know how it is . An alarm goes out in the middle of the night, and you're supposed to rush down on the trucks. Reaching the place is not such an eyecandy, cus its fire around, but trust me, once you extinguish that fire, and see the smiling faces of the people you have rescued, it is a great feeling.
Every morning getting up, doing briefing and cleaning trucks. Its how it is. Ive never been on an overnight shift, well because according to some, Im too young, but ive been there helping around quiet a number of times.
Later you get calls and you're out. I've worked on a 90 metre ladder, and a 42 metre one. There have been highrises and normal ones. On the station, each one of the firefighters is like your brother. We never let each other down, and we never leave anyone behind. Its another family that you've got. We sleep together in one room, we eat together, we cry together. Its all-for-one and one-for-all.

That's me, while responding to a night fire. This one was from my place. When I had rushed to a nearby fire, and met my colleagues there. It was a highrise fire, a short-circuited Air Conditioner caused the whole house to burn. We evacuated an old couple , maybe in their 70's , and some more people.
Let me tell you, firefighters don't have that much respect in the world, but after responding, the people thanking you, smiling at you, praising you is a great feeling.
Lets move on to a Paramedic.
Its a job where I get to be in an Ambulance and save lives. Its just responding , and saving lives. It involves skills, and luck. Luck, that is one thing which is important. As someone said "gonna keep 'em going, but you know its up to God" , it really is. You need to be emotionally fit. I've seen people die, and even I've got tears in my eyes, but in the end its you who makes a difference. Its just one call, in the ambulance, lights on, sirens on, and rush through.
This article is more of an emotional one, because you really can't describe "how is it like to be an EMT" in words, its all emotions and power.
I'd like to conclude by telling you all, that in the end, it's a proud feeling. And what makes us go on the next day is we and are second family, who know, that when that alarm goes off, were going to honor all our brothers, by getting on that truck , and saving lives.
